Thank God I survived taco night

Rieker, our official taco guy ran late for dinner, so, I tried to make them without him. I didn't think you had to "read" directions to heat taco shells in the toaster oven, so I put the shells in the oven like we toast our bread, without a tray. I look over and I see flames inside the oven! I run over, open the door, and flames coming shooting out of the oven, licking over the top shelf, dangerously close to my stand mixer. i freakin' freaked! The only thing I remembered is that you do NOT use water to put out the fire, and that's all. I closed the toaster oven door, hoping I wouldn't have to break out the fire extinguisher. I started yelling for tommy who wanted to watch the steeler game with us. He came in opening doors and windows and fanning out the smoke. I unplugged the toaster oven, and I think the taco shells just burned out in the oven, smoking us out of the house. Wow! who knew tacos could be so dangerous?

I just read that you are not supposed to wash your wooden rolling pins. And, if you do wash it, rub some veg oil or shortening on it so it won't dry out.

Logan's Menagerie

Image
This was Logan's new friend that he found on the screen outside the pool. He names it Liz the Lizard. We found a turtle on the back lawn which looked like it was trying to return to the swamp . . . but first Logan had to introduce himself. We then put him on the edge of the lawn close to the swamp and when we looked back he was gone. I guess he decided to make a quick getaway. Go figure - Logan is such a likeable fellow! Logan takes Liz on the swing for a ride. He later tried to save it by putting it under a bucket - apparently, the bucket landed on Liz and she is no longer with us. Logan claims her eyes bugged out . . . yes, he did mean it literally . . . Logan's menagerie would not be complete without his best pal Bonnie. L ogan asked me if he looked like her - you be the judge . . . scary, isn't it?

Pittsburgh, Get lost, Part I Destination: Stony Creek in Somerset County Rieker and I decided to escape the 85 degree plus weather in Pittsburgh, and go to the mountains. We packed up all three dogs and decided to go fishing. PA Turnpike, East Taking the Somerset Exit off the turnpike. Grandpa Rieker was outraged at the price hike they implemented a few years ago on the turnpike. I guess we weren't too confident in our fishing luck, because we decided to hedge our bets at McDonald's before we went. To get to Rieker's fishing spot, we had to hike this railroad 4-ever... Believe you me, he heard all about it all the way down the path. Maybe that's why he decided to walk so far ahead. Then we had to go rock surfing across the creek. It's very rocky and slippery, especially where the water moves a little faster, so it's a good idea to wear some old shoes with some grip and protection. It's worth it, though, for the view and the feel of the nice cool mountain wat...
