Day Two: Part I: Apache Trail: Superstition Mountain & Mammoth Saloon

One of the few things planned on this trip was to drive the Apache Trail.
http://www.apachetrail.net/
Apparently, it was the road used to construct the Roosevelt Dam and is considered a picturesque and slightly dangerous drive. I knew I would enjoy the picturesque part, and Rieker would enjoy the challenging drive. It was right on. Right off the bat, the trail starts off with the spooky Supertition Mountain. Why it is called that, I don't know, but I can guess just by looking at it.
We stopped right past the mountain in Goldfield Ghostown, circa 1890. http://www.goldfieldghosttown.com/index.html
We heard the trail farther down was quite desolate, and wanted to make sure we ate lunch before we went much farther. It was a good call because that ghost town was the last big town on the trail. We ate at the Mammoth Steakhouse and Saloon, that's what they like to call restaurants there "saloons". Lunch was delicious.

  3. joy i love looking at your posts. i like how you link something of interest and the pictures of everything from tourist sights to food. that burger made me long for one too. btw - we finally ate the venison sausage you and rieker left behind a couple of years ago (has it really been that long). i got some big thumbs way up. I took out of the casing and sauteed with garlic, onion, one chopped left over baked potato and leftover rice. Then I sprinkled chopped green onions over the top. It didn't need any salt or seasoning because the sausage flavored it. You should see how clean my fridge & pantry are getting since i am trying to use what i have. may have to go to wd though because they have white asparagus on sale. if you have not tried, you must - it is so delicious - not as strong of a flavor as with the green stuff.
